There is no shortage of great places to stay on California’s Big Sur coast. However, arguably the most unique is Treebones resort. This eco resort is a family-run business, nestled perfectly near the amazing cliffs of Big Sur, allowing guests to look out over the Pacific Ocean.

With an oceanfront campsite, their signature yurts and the ‘human nest’, Treebones resort offers some fantastic services to go with their spectacular location, including a hot tub and great sushi bar.

And that’s only the beginning.

Experience a Night in a Yurt at Treebones Resort

The top priority of Treebones is to care for the surrounding environment so that their resort works in unity with the natural landscape, preserving its beauty. With this in mind, the concept of using yurts arose, and the family battled hard for five years to secure the permits that allowed their vision to become reality.

While you can come and camp here, the authentic experiences at Treebones resort is all about the yurts. These Mongolian circular huts are constructed from fabric and wood, and raised on platforms to leave a light footprint on the earth.

There is a total of 16 yurts at the resort, with many boasting beautiful views of the ocean. All yurts have luxurious queen-size beds, a futon and a cozy fireplace. Even better is the addition of a sink with potable water.

While the communal restrooms require a little walk in the night if you wake up with the need for the toilet, the comfy beds and heated rooms make for an unforgettable experience.

The Human Nest

The gem in this camping haven is one that has got a lot of people talking, with curiosity stoked by the name alone.

The Human Nest is an unusual work of woven wood art, which comprises a large futon mattress, a wooden ladder, and access to the water nearby. With a prime location in the property, lucky guests staying in the Human Nest can enjoy incredible, unobstructed ocean views.

Unsurprisingly, there is a long waiting list for The Human Nest, with the $150 per night price tag doing little to deter visitors from wanting the best experience at Treebones. Those who want to stay here will need to book months in advance.

Delightful Dining in Natural Beauty

There’s more to a good night’s sleep in store here. Amidst the natural beauty of Big Sur, this property has a koi pond and wonderful garden, which provides organic produce for the lodge restaurant.

Camping doesn’t always come with the promise of great food, even when you do in style. However, at Treebones, there are no such worries.

Aside from the main canteen that offers supplies including beer and wine, there is also a restaurant that serves up delicious, fresh dishes using the aforementioned homegrown produce.

After a long day on the hiking trails, the meals here are the perfect way to recover. To go one better, you can bring some of their fantastic sandwiches on your trek to keep you fueled.

The true gem, however, is Oceanview Sushi Bar. This tasty spot has made a name for itself in its own right, with dishes inspired by nature and a fun atmosphere, it’s well worth at least one night during your stay. That’s if you can nab a seat – with only ten available, you need to get here early!

Adventure is All Around

Big Sur is an adventurer’s dream, offering scores of beautiful hikes and jaw-dropping scenery in the area close to the resort.

Just across the street is the famous McWay Falls, where you can snap photos of a spectacular 80-foot waterfall dropping onto a beach. Forest lovers can get lost among the Redwoods in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, and beach bums can work on their tan along the coast. One standout is San Simeon, where visitors can hang out with elephant seals or possibly catch a glimpse of a humpback whale.

An unmissable stop in the Big Sur area is the iconic Bixby bridge. Rain or shine, it’s a photo worth having from your time exploring Big Sur during your stay at Treebones Resort.
